The Buddha said it is the most difficult thing to be or to do. You all are born as human beings, having found dhamma, and having someone to teach you dhamma and guide you to the path of nibbana.
การเกิดเป็นมนุษย์เป็นของยาก
สมัยพุทธกาลพระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงธรรมอยู่ ณ วัดพระเชตวัน มีอุบาสก 5 คนเป็นเพื่อนกัน มานั่งฟังธรรม ทั้ง 5 คนต่างมีกิริยาอาการต่าง ๆ กัน
คนหนึ่งนั่งหลับ
คนหนึ่งนั่งเอานิ้วเขียนพื้นดินเล่น
คนหนึ่งนั่งเขย่า ต้นไม้
คนหนึ่งนั่งแหงนดูท้องฟ้า
มีเพียงคนเดียวที่นังฟังธรรมด้วย อาการสงบ
พระอานนท์กราบทูลถามพระพุทธเจ้าว่า "ทำไมอุบาสกเหล่านี้จึงแสดงกิริยาเช่นนั้น" พระพุทธเจ้าจึงทรงเล่าอดีตชาติของอุบาสกแต่ละคนว่า
อุบาสกที่นั่งหลับ เคยเกิดเป็นงูมาแล้วหลายร้อยชาติ เขาหลับมาหลายร้อยชาติแล้วก็ยังไม่อิ่ม แม้แต่ฟังเทศน์พระพุทธเจ้า ธรรมะก็ไม่เข้าหู ยังหลับอยู่อย่างนั้น
อุบาสกที่นั่งเอานิ้วเขียน พื้นดิน เคยเกิดเป็นไส้เดือนมาหลายร้อยชาติ นั่งเอานิ้วเขียนบนพื้นดินเล่นอยู่อย่างนั้น ด้วยอำนาจความประพฤติที่ตัวเคยทำมา ก็ไม่ได้ยินธรรมะของพระพุทธเจ้าเช่นกัน
อุบาสกที่นั่งเขย่าต้นไม้อยู่นั้น เกิดเป็นลิงมาแล้วหลายร้อยชาติ ถึงบัดนี้ก็ยังเขย่าต้นไม้อยู่ ไม่ได้ยินธรรมะของพระพุทธเจ้าเช่นกัน
อุบาสกที่นังแหงนดูท้องฟ้านั้น เคยเกิดเป็นพราหมณ์บอกฤกษ์ด้วยการดูดาวมาหลายร้อยชาติ ถึงบัดนี้ก็ยังคงนั่งดูท้องฟ้าอยู่ ไม่ได้ยินธรรมะของพระพุทธเจ้า
อุบาสกที่นั่งฟังธรรมอย่างสงบด้วยความเคารพ เคยเกิดเป็นพราหมณ์ศึกษาธรรมะและปรัชญา ค้นคว้าหาความจริงมาหลายร้อยชาติ มาบัดนี้ได้พบพระพุทธเจ้า ตั้งใจฟังธรรมด้วยดี จนได้ดวงตาเห็นธรรมเป็นพระโสดาบัน
อ่านมาถึงตรงนี้หลายคนอาจจะนึกสงสัยว่า ชาติก่อนเราเกิดเป็นอะไรหนอ
พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสไว้ว่า การได้เกิดเป็นมนุษย์นั้นเป็นเรื่องยาก ต้องมีบุญมาก อุปมาเหมือนเต่าตาบอดตัวหนึ่งดำน้ำอยู่ในทะเล ทุกๆ 100 ปี เต่าตาบอดตัวนั้นจะโผล่หัวขึ้นมาจากทะเลครั้งหนึ่ง ในทะเลมีห่วงเล็กๆ ขนาดใหญ่กว่าหัวเต่าหน่อยหนึ่งลอยอยู่ 1 ห่วง โอกาสที่เต่าตาบอดตัวนั้นจะโผล่ขึ้นมา แล้วหัวสวมเข้ากับห่วงพอดียากเพียงใด โอกาสนั้นก็ยังมีมากกว่า การที่เหล่าสรรพสัตว์จะได้มาเกิดเป็นมนุษย์
ในฐานะมนุษย์ไม่มากก็น้อยที่ใจของเราได้มีประสบการณ์ในภพชาติอื่น ๆ ทั้งที่ต่ำกว่าและสูงกว่าภพมนุษย์ เรามีปัญญาที่จะรู้ได้จากประสบการณ์ของเราแล้วว่าอะไรดี อะไรไม่ดี
การเกิดเป็นมนุษย์ถ้าดีก็ดีได้มากๆ แต่ก็น่ากลัวเหมือนกัน เพราะถ้าประมาทก็ทำชั่วได้มาก ถ้าไม่ประมาท รักษาศีล 5 ทำความดี สร้างบารมี ตั้งใจพัฒนาชีวิตจิตใจแล้วก็สามารถมีประสบการณ์สูงขึ้น เป็นเทวดา พรหม ตลอดจนเข้าถึงอริยมรรค อริยผล บรรลุนิพพานได้ มนุษย์จึงเป็นชาติที่มีทางเลือก
พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสไว้ว่า
เป็นการยากที่ได้เกิดเป็นมนุษย์
เป็นการยากที่ชีวิตสัตว์จะได้ อยู่สบาย
เป็นการยากที่จะได้ฟังธรรมของสัตบุรุษ
เป็นการยากที่พระ พุทธเจ้าจะอุบัติมา
เมื่อรู้เช่นนี้แล้วเราจึงควรเห็นคุณค่าของการเกิดเป็นมนุษย์ อย่าให้เสียโอกาส เสียเวลาไปโดยเปล่าประโยชน์เอาใจใส่รักษาความเป็นมนุษย์ไว้ให้มั่นคง
ดังนั้นสำหรับการเกิดเป็นมนุษย์ในชาติหนึ่ง การเลือกทางดำเนินชีวิตของเราจึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่สุด
การอุบัติของพระพุทธเจ้ามีได้ยาก
การได้เกิดมาเป็นมนุษย์เป็นของยาก
การได้เกิดมาเป็นมนุษย์แล้วพบพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นเรื่องยากอย่างยิ่งกว่า

Buddha’s teachings
Being born once as human being and have a chance like this is very rare. There are millions of people in this world. But there is rare chance to be able to listen to dhamma and practice dhamma like this. The Buddha said it is the most difficult thing to be or to do. You all are born as human beings, having found dhamma, and having someone to teach you dhamma and guide you to the path of nibbana. It is the most difficult. Once the disciple asked the Buddha how difficult it was. He replied that it was incomparable. But he could give one example. In assumption, this whole land became gigantic ocean and at the bottom of the great ocean, there lived a blind turtle. Every one hundred year, it would rise to the surface and take a breath. Then people with a yoke whose size fitted perfectly with this turtle’s neck would try to throw this yoke into the ocean in hope that this yoke hung around the turtle’s neck perfectly when it resurfaced. It is when that yoke hangs around this turtle’s neck, then that is the chance to be born as human beings, finding and listening to dhamma like this. The Buddha then asked how difficult it was to have that yoke hung around this blind turtle’s neck. The disciples all replied that it was extremely difficult. Therefore, being born as human beings and let this opportunity pass is just useless. The second chance to return back again is even harder. You all, born as human beings, have a chance to listen to dhamma like this is the noblest. The merit (boon) you have made from listening to dhamma here today will be carried on within yourselves, in your minds for always. If you cannot achieve nibbana in this life, this merit will be one of the ten merits that will bring you back to human life again and have a chance to listen to dhamma again. So you all are very fortunate to have a chance to practice dhamma. Other merits the Buddha mentioned are Dana (giving), Sila (precepts), and Bhavana (meditation)
